Canadian Premature Babies Foundation Applauds Federal Government

Edmonton, Alberta – Wednesday, June 12, 2013 – As of June 9th, eligible parents who take leave from work to provide care or support to their critically ill or injured child can receive Employment Insurance (EI) special benefits for Parents of Critically Ill Children (PCIC).

"This is wonderful news for parents of premature children who qualify for this benefit. Raising a premature child can take quite a toll on family life and work life. Depending on the health complications of your child it is often difficult to return to work," says Katharina Staub President of the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation. "This is a big step forward in investing in the health and well-being of Canadian families."

One in 10 babies are born too early, according to the World Health Organization. Premature newborns are the largest pediatric patient group in Canada but there is little awareness in the public about pre-term birth and associated health complications.

The Foundation’s mission is three-fold; to reduce preterm birth through education and research, to support the best standards of care for premature babies, and to give premature babies and their families a voice across Canada.
